Definition

This is a neuroendocrine tumour (NET) characterized by the secretion of serotonin by enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells. Serotonin-producing carcinoids are unusual in the upper small intestine. In the duodenum they only exceptionally give rise to a clinical carcinoid syndrome
